Be part of a first of its kind sailing expedition. Across a fragile frozen landscape. Be part of an adventure that will make history. Participate in our sail training vessel to learn about open sea and polar navigation.
In March 2011, a small band of explorers set sail to circumnavigate North and South America, through the Northwest Passage and across the perilous and sadly thawing Arctic Circle. We will be the third sailboat in history to complete this journey and the first to do it in a single season. MAKING PASSAGE will probe the future reality we face as our current way of life transforms the planet.
Why are we doing this?
Beyond its immeasurable beauty and historical significance, there are many serious and tragic environmental stories to tell on this journey about dying reefs, vanishing wildlife, and melting ice caps. We will explore and touch on all of these in some way or another. However, the reality is we are just sailors afraid of the devastating consequences that will come if commercial shipping traffic and cruise boats flood into the newly opened passage. This trip is about exposing these issues in a beautiful and thoughtful way. We want to protect what we love and help others see and understand what is possible and why to preserve.
